Florida Tech Among Selected US Schools In New Global Higher Education Impact Rankings

669 universities ranked, including five in Florida

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech was one of a handful of US universities listed in the 2021 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.

A list dominated by international schools that highlights the success of institutions in research, management, outreach and teaching in relation to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Overall, the ranking includes 1,115 universities from 94 countries and regions. Florida Tech has been ranked in four Sustainable Development Goals.

Life underwater: This measures universities’ research on life underwater and their education and support for aquatic ecosystems. Florida Tech was one of 17 U.S. universities – including five from Florida – out of 379 total registrations.

Research on life underwater and support for aquatic ecosystems through education and action were key measures for this category.

Sustainable cities and communities: The objective of this ranking includes the institutions’ research on sustainability and their internal approaches to sustainability.

Florida Tech was one of 32 US schools – including five from Florida – among the 656 ranked in total. Sustainable practices and sustainability research were the main measures.

Climate action: This ranking explores universities’ research on climate change, their energy use and their preparations to deal with the consequences of climate change.

Of the 566 schools ranked, there were only 20 in the United States, including Florida Tech and four other schools in Florida. Metrics focused on research on climate action, low carbon energy use and environmental education measures.

Reduced inequalities: This measure highlights university research on social inequalities, their policies on discrimination and their commitment to recruit staff and students from under-represented groups.

There were 669 universities ranked, of which only 33 US institutions, including five in Florida.

Research, first-generation students and students from developing countries, and anti-discrimination measures were among the key measures for this category.

The University of Manchester in the UK was the top university in THE Impact Rankings 2021, with three Australian schools completing the top four.

American universities ranked first in just two of the 17 UN goals: Climate Action (University of Buffalo) and Good Health and Well-Being (Oregon University of Health and Sciences.)
