SDCCD: Mesa College Named Higher Education Equity Champion in 2021

November 3, 2021

San Diego Mesa College was named Higher Education Equity Champion in 2021 by
The Campaign for the Academic Opportunity to Award Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT)
to black and Latinx students.

Colleges are recognized for their actions to intentionally ensure that blacks and
Latinx students who have a transfer goal earn an ADT. This is determined by the percentage
point gap (PPG), which identifies campuses, such as Mesa College, which excel
in the allocation of ADT to Latinx and black students, compared to their allocation of campus-wide ADT
rates. In all California community colleges, Mesa is recognized as having a
proportion of black and Latin students seeking a degree or transfer who received a
ADT for the 2019-2020 academic year. This achievement is indicative of fairness
work in which Mesa College engages daily.

“We are proud of the students who have obtained these degrees, the professors and the committed staff.
who support them, ”said Dr Pamela Luster, President of Mesa College. ” We commit ourselves
efforts to increase the success of black and Latin American transfer students through centering
racial equity in our work.

Campaign for College Opportunity will recognize San Diego Mesa College for their
virtual event, Celebration of Higher Education Champions, to be held on Tuesday November
16, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. via zoom. Honorable Assembly Member Marc Berman is invited
provide feedback, with student leaders and other California Community Colleges
and the CSU laureates. The virtual celebration will bring together around 200-400
participants representing the leadership of higher education in California, elected officials,
corporate sponsors; and civic and business leaders.
